Målstyret undervisning og taksonomier (Goal-oriented Teaching and Taxonomies).

I love my job. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities.

Recently I was invited to contribute a chapter on SOLO Taxonomy to a new Danish anthology exploring goal-oriented teaching and taxonomies.

The context of the anthology is primary and lower secondary school in Denmark, so you are writing to teachers, school leaders, consultants and researchers in the educational field. Goal-oriented teaching is a direct translation of the Danish term målstyret undervisning, which is very similar to outcomes-based teaching. This focus on taxonomies is a result of the wide-spread acknowledgement of the need to implement the principles from John Hattie’s Visible Learning in Denmark. Especially the importance of focusing on learning goals rather than just planning activities and how to build an effective feedback culture is emphasized.

I am grateful to John Biggs for recommending I write the chapter and for his favourable review of the finished work. The chapter has been accepted by the publishers and sent off to be translated into Danish.

Hook, P. (In press). SOLO taksonomi. In Vinther, A. M. (Ed.), Målstyret undervisning og taksonomier (English: Goal-oriented Teaching and Taxonomies). Dafolo Forlag.

My ability to receive or produce information in languages apart from English is pretty well captured in the self- assessment rubric I worked on yesterday with the languages department at Lincoln High School in Christchurch. I have no difficulty assessing my performance outcome as matching the descriptors for prestructural outcomes. If interested you can download the draft rubric here SOLO Learning Languages Rubric

For this reason I sought and have gained permission, from the editor and publishers of Målstyret undervisning og taksonomier, to share the English version of the chapter on SOLO Taxonomy with schools and teachers I am working with. I believe that it provides a useful overview of the classroom based approach to SOLO Taxonomy used across many New Zealand primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

Please contact me if you would like a copy for staff professional reading.
