New SOLO resources on YouTube
The HookED SOLO Map Animations are instructional (how to) video for the SOLO Maps.
The first SOLO Maps to be animated: Define, Describe, Sequence, Classify, Compare and Contrast, Generalise, and Predict
Each animation is designed by the ever fabulous Nick Denton. And yes I will be uploading more SOLO Map animations as they become available.
What are the SOLO Maps?
SOLO maps are process models for the academic language used in schools. They slow down and deepen student thinking, and when used well can lead to enhanced achievement outcomes in oral and written language.
What is different about the latest maps?
I have refined the SOLO maps a number of times sometimes with small tweaks other times a map have been completely redrawn. I see this as an ongoing process. Each iteration is a response to student/teacher feedback and my desire to make the process steps for academic tasks more accessible (aka visible) to learners.
From this work I have come to understand that there are three SOLO elements in each map – the three elements are ubiquitous – and as such form the constituent parts of any academic language task.
In my latest iteration of the SOLO maps I use three shapes to make these elements visible. In each SOLO map you will notice:
- SOLO rectangles (used to represent loose ideas – multistructural outcome),
- SOLO speech bubbles (used to represent connected ideas – relational outcome) and
- SOLO thought bubbles (used to represent extended ideas zooming out to look at ideas in new ways – extended abstract outcome).
In this way each SOLO map is also a SOLO rubric – or a model within a model.
Pause and think about this. Each map helps students complete an academic task AND each map helps students differentiate the level of complexity of their learning outcome when completing the task. That is something worth sharing.
