They call it “the one map to rule them all” or “the exploded describe map”
Wellington designer Nick Denton has captured the power and the presence of the HookED SOLO Describe ++ Map in his latest SOLO poster designs.
I am delighted to report that two versions of these posters are now available for purchase and download in the HookED store.
The HookED SOLO Describe ++ Map (and self-assessment rubric) is a powerful literacy tool – scaffolding student writing for both
- simple sentences to complex sentences to paragraphs; and
- unistructural, to multistructural, to relational to extended abstract content thinking.
Initially intended for use in secondary settings (to help students make sense of the discriminators between achievement, merit and excellence outcomes in NCEA assessments) the “see think wonder” version of the map has proven equally effective in supporting primary students’ written language outcomes and in helping all students distinguish between observation and inference in science investigations.
The HookED Describe Plus Plus map has been used to help students think and write deeply about music, images, oral language, digital content, experiences etc. There is even an NCEA maths problem solving version of the map developed with Mitch Howard and members of the maths department at Lincoln High School in Christchurch.
You can download examples that show how the map is being used in schools here.
