How do I use it?

1. Align the HOT SOLO Classify Map and self assessment rubric with the identified learning intention. For example, we are learning to classify [content] [context].

2. Group the ideas or objects on the basis of observed similarities.

3. Make sub-groupings within each category.

4. Arrange these grouping and sub-groupings into a hierarchical tree structure.

5. Draw connections between the categories explaining how and why they are distinct from each other.

6. Make a generalisation about the classification. E.g. Overall … because …because.

7. Share the success criteria for sequencing in the HOT SOLO classify rubric.

8. With reference to the success criteria, students create statements categorising an idea using the target vocabulary from the completed HOT SOLO Classify Map. These classifications can be written, oral or a series of annotated drawings. This process is iterative and can be repeated whenever new learning occurs enabling the classification statements to be improved.

9. Students self assess/peer assess and seek teacher feedback on their classify statements.

10. Students assess their learning outcome for the identified learning intention against the SOLO levels, explain why they have chosen this level of learning outcome for their work (feedback) and suggest where to next steps (feed up).

11. Record this in a student learning log.
